Today was a rest day. After brunch (coffee & a savoury muffin) at Fiddlesticks Restaurant & Bar, we spent the morning buying much needed thermals after experiencing such a cold night camping in Whatamango. The staff at Complete Outdoors were really great; very helpful & friendly

As we travelled around Christchurch, we could still witness the devastation the city had suffered & is still suffering due to the earthquakes they have endured over the years. There was so much road works going on & detours to take due to rebuilding the city.

Last stop of the day before catching up with friends was at Casbolts Motorcycles for gloves a much needed pair of boots. The ones I was wearing had pretty much come to the end of their life & my feet were getting too wet.

We had originally planned to take the East Coast along SH1 to Kaikoura and then onto Christchurch but this changed due to earthquakes in the area in the month before which had closed roads into Kaikoura.

The staff there were also really good. It did amaze me that the people we meet in Christchurch were so friendly & happy despite the trauma they had suffered (or maybe it was because of it).

The afternoon was spent with friends & a visit to Birdlings Flat, which is on the road to Akaroa. We spent the early afternoon watching people unsuccessfully trying to fish while our mate pointed out what they were doing wrong. It was lovely listening to the waves break & I always love the smell of the sea.

The early evening was so beautiful & very sunny. It was lovely to relax in the backyard soaking up the sun before enjoying a proper South African barbecue & the hospitality of some really lovely friends.
