The beginning of the South Island adventure

Whatamango Bay is very picturesque, so quiet & still. There were about 5 or 6 other groups at the campground but you did not notice them. There was plenty of space for everyone.

After a freezing night in the tent, I longed for day to break so we could head off to a warmer climate. Once the first signs of dawn approached, I was out of my tent in search of some warmth. Even though it was uncomfortably cold, it was a very beautiful location & once the sun had risen above the hills that surrounded us, it was very pleasant.

We had originally planned to take the East Coast along SH1 to Kaikoura and then onto Christchurch but this changed due to earthquakes in the area in the month before which had closed roads into Kaikoura.

After a hearty breakfast at Ritual in Blenheim, including coffee, we headed west, avoiding SH63 due to the increased traffic volumes & headed along SH6 to Murchison. SH6 also had increased traffic with a few trucks on the road. After leaving Murchison, continued along SH6 & at Reefton we turned to the east & travelled along SH7 into Lewis Pass.

Lewis Pass was an interesting ride as just about each turn brought a change in weather. With one turn you would start riding into heavy enough rain for you to feel it seeping into the layers. The horizon ahead coaxed you along with the promise of sunshine if you persisted. So the focus would be on the horizon & counting down until you reached the warmth & dryness of that sunshine dangled in front of you.

Once you reached the sunshine, the warmth would embraced you & each turn was taken wondering how long you had to enjoy the delicious sun before the rain reappeared as you watch the threatening dark clouds approaching.

Thankfully as we left the pass we also left the rain. But we also left some enjoyable mountain climbs.

That night we ended up staying at Abbella Lodge Motel which I would recommend due to the lovely friendly staff. It was reasonably priced & very clean.
