The night we arrived in Dunedin, after finding our accommodation at the Kiwi Nest backpackers, which was cheap, clean & friendly staff, we spent the evening relaxing in an Irish pub; The Bog.
I really enjoyed the evening, it was a relaxed atmosphere with groups of people having a good time & enjoying themselves catching up with their friends. The food was great & the Guinness even better! After our pub grub & pints, there was a difference of opinion on what to do. I just wanted to relax with a book. I had brought along my kindle so I was quite content settling on my bed & reading, whereas Manny wanted to check out the night life. My night ended with my kindle & I suspect Manny had a social night with a few of the other guests at the backpackers.
The next day before heading further south, we made a stop at Baldwin Street.
Bloody hell! that is one hell of a step road ‐ it is the steepest street in the world. How the hell did people build houses up there! Manny was tempted to try riding to the top. At this point, as I watched him approach the climb, I was sure this was the end of our adventure.
Fortunately, he stopped just as the road started to curve upwards. I must admit I was kinda holding my breath until he stopped. I found out afterwards that he was pretty much forced to stop as his types started to slip & was unable to stay gripped to the road. Either that or common sense kicked in!
After the nervous stop at Baldwin Street, we headed along & up the Otago peninsula out to Larnach Castle, which is a nice wee ride with some pretty views of the bay. Larnach Castle is interesting as part of New Zealand's history in regards to William Larnach. But it's story, in terms of restoring the castle, is interesting & is a great example of the New Zealand can-do attitude that I am so proud of.
After enjoying the castle, gardens & some food we continued on our journey south.
